History
No. 255 Squadron RAF was re-formed in November 1940 as a night-fighter squadron. It operated in Britain before moving to the Mediterranean, where its Beaufighters were used for night defence and offensive fighter work across North Africa, Sicily and Italy. The squadron later flew de Havilland Mosquito night fighters, continuing the specialist work of interception in darkness and poor weather. No. 255’s wartime career reflects the RAF’s rapid development of night-fighter methods: radar-equipped aircraft, trained crews and ground control brought together to defend bases, ports and invasion routes after dark.
