History

No. 268 Squadron RAF was formed in 1940 for army co-operation and tactical reconnaissance work. It used Lysanders at first, then moved to faster types including Mustangs and Spitfires as tactical reconnaissance became more demanding. The squadron joined the build-up to the invasion of north-west Europe and later operated with the Second Tactical Air Force, providing low-level reconnaissance for Allied armies after D-Day. Its crews gathered battlefield information, watched roads and railways, and helped commanders understand enemy movement. No. 268’s wartime role was intelligence-led flying close to the front line.
