Airborne Forces / Glider

History

No. 297 Squadron was an airborne-forces squadron of the RAF, flying Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys and later Halifaxes and Albemarles. It dropped paratroops and towed Horsa and Hamilcar gliders on the great airborne operations of 1944–45 — the Normandy landings, Arnhem and the Rhine crossing — and also flew supply missions to the resistance in occupied Europe.
