History

No. 311 Squadron was the RAF’s Czechoslovak-manned heavy bomber squadron, forming in July 1940 with Vickers Wellingtons. It served with Bomber Command during the early night bombing campaign before transferring to Coastal Command in 1942 for Atlantic and Bay of Biscay patrols. Later equipped with Liberators, the squadron attacked U-boats and blockade runners, moved to northern Scotland for patrols off Norway in 1944, and after the war flew transport services to Czechoslovakia before ceasing to be an RAF unit in February 1946.
