History

No. 613 (City of Manchester) Squadron was an Auxiliary Air Force squadron that flew in the army co-operation role early in the war before re-equipping with the de Havilland Mosquito in No. 2 Group of the Second Tactical Air Force. With the Mosquito it specialised in pinpoint low-level attacks, most famously the raid on the Gestapo records headquarters at Aarhus in Denmark in October 1944.

Flight-Lieutenant R H A Lee, after being awarded the DSO and DFC, and Flying Officer K H Blair, after being awarded the DFC, by King George VI at RAF Hornchurch, Essex. The awards were given for their distinguished service as fighter pilots with [No. 85 Squadron](/squadrons/73/) RAF in France. Lee, a flight commander with the Squadron, was posted missing in action on 18 August 1940, having destroyed at least 9 enemy aircraft. Blair flew with [No. 151 Squadron](/squadrons/163/) RAF during the Battle of Britain, and later converted to night fighters. He finished the war commanding [No. 613 Squadron](/squadrons/372/) RAF, having brought his victory score to 12.
