RAF Macmerry (penston Or Tranent)
About
RAF Macmerry occupied a pre-war civil aerodrome in East Lothian, east of Edinburgh, and served through the Second World War in fighter, coastal-strike and army-cooperation roles. Squadrons flying Hawker Hurricanes, Bristol Blenheims, Westland Lysanders and North American Mustangs operated from it on east-coast defence and reconnaissance, and it was also used as an operational-training satellite and a gliding school. Flying ended in 1953, and the site is now occupied by a business park, a go-kart track and the realigned A1 road.
