RAF Speke
About
RAF Speke, on the Mersey estuary at Liverpool, was a civil airfield taken over by the RAF in the Second World War. As well as flying fighter defence — a Czech-manned squadron and the Merchant Ship Fighter Unit were based there — it was a major centre of aircraft production: the Rootes shadow factory built Bristol Blenheims and more than a thousand Handley Page Halifaxes, while Lockheed assembled Hudsons and North American Mustangs shipped in from the United States. The airfield grew after the war into Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
