Biography
James Grant Fleming was a Squadron Leader and pilot, service number 40380. CWGC records his death on 6 September 1944 and his burial at Rheinberg War Cemetery. Veterans Affairs Canada gives his unit as No. 540 Squadron RAF and records his parents as John Warren Fleming and Elsie Agnes Grant of Calgary, Alberta.
Canadian and Irish aviation sources add a wider career trail. The Royal Canadian Air Force Association award search records Fleming’s DFC with No. 201 Squadron, awarded in the London Gazette of 21 February 1941, and notes he was born in Calgary on 23 May 1917. WW2 Irish Aviation records him as pilot of Sunderland W3988 of No. 201 Squadron, interned in the Curragh after landing in Ireland in December 1941 and later escaping in 1942. Veterans Affairs Canada records digital newspaper material and a family-held DFC and Bar. No final aircraft loss is asserted because the checked search results did not provide it.
