History

No. 10 Operational Training Unit was formed at RAF Abingdon in Oxfordshire on 8 April 1940, within No. 6 (later No. 91) Group, to convert crews onto the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley night bomber. Beyond its training role the unit also flew operationally: from 1942 a detachment based at St Eval in Cornwall carried out long anti-submarine patrols over the Bay of Biscay on behalf of Coastal Command, with pupil crews flying war sorties as part of their final training. Whitleys were later supplemented and replaced by the Vickers Wellington. The unit remained at Abingdon throughout the war and was disbanded in 1947.
