History
No. 19 Operational Training Unit was formed at RAF Kinloss in Morayshire on 27 May 1940, training night-bomber crews on the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley within No. 91 Group. Flying training over the mountains of the Scottish Highlands in poor weather made for a high accident rate, and the unit’s losses on cross-country and navigation exercises account for many of the wartime airmen commemorated in Highland and Moray churchyards. It used the satellite airfield at Forres and trained crews until mid-1945.
