History
Formed on 1 September 1942 at RAF Feltwell, Norfolk, No. 464 Squadron was an Article XV squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force that served within the RAF’s No. 2 Group throughout the war. Although mustered under RAAF authority, its aircrew were drawn from across the Commonwealth, with Australians eventually forming a bare majority. The squadron began operations with Lockheed Venturas, opening its account on the precision attack against the Philips works at Eindhoven in December 1942. Re-equipped with de Havilland Mosquito FB.VIs from July 1943, it transferred with 2 Group into the 2nd Tactical Air Force and turned to low-level precision raiding. Its record included the Amiens prison breach (Operation Jericho, February 1944), a strike on the Gestapo complex at Aarhus University (October 1944), and Operation Carthage against the Shellhus in Copenhagen (March 1945). The squadron flew 3,067 sorties and was disbanded at Melsbroek in September 1945.
